Mentorship Program

Overview _____________________________________________________________________
The mentor program for The Consortium Finance and Bankers Group (CFBG) is designed to prepare members to pursue careers in Finance. Initially, this program will pair first-year member with second-year members in the same field of interest. At the same time, the first-year fellows will be paired with Consortium Finance Network (CFN) alumni members in fields that interest the students. Second-year members will help the first-year members in their efforts to navigate the recruiting process (the initial stages of networking), prepare for career fairs, and connect to the Consortium alumni.

The CFN alumni member will help the first-year students by providing career advice, interviewing tips, and insight on the alumni’s firms. The alumni are also the points of contact for the students interested in the firms that alumni are familiar with. For example, the alumni could alert students about opportunities in their firms and connect students to recruiters and vice versa.

Students are expected to utilize the alumni and second-year mentors as sounding boards to craft their pitches, finalize their game plan, and gain insight into the recruiting process of specific firms. We will attempt to pair alumni and students based not only on the students’ career interests, but also on the alumni’s firms and Alma Mater. However, at times this might not be possible because of alumni/student participation. Moreover, our ultimate goal is to change the face of Wall Street and to encourage relationships among the Consortium family. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Goals

· Increase the level of preparedness of Consortium students to engage in the recruiting process.
· Create a safe environment for students to receive feedback and guidance in the industry.
· Foster long-term mentor-mentee relationships between CFN alumni members and CFBG members.

Structure
· First-year students will be paired with second-year students and alumni in the industry that interest them (CFN to provide list of willing alumni members).
· Multiple touch points are expected throughout the student’s first year as members of the CFBG through email and phone conversations as well as in-person visits.
· Alumni can help by providing individual advice or by speaking to entire group during CFBG conference calls.

Expectations

· The mentor-mentee relationship should be flexible to be the most rewarding for the student and mentor.

Incentives

· This program is one avenue whereby alumni and students alike can give back to The Consortium. This program requires that all participants give and take. Students who fail to contribute/participate may not be extended the invitation to attend the CFN networking events and may not share of the list of alumni willing to mentor.

New York City and Speakers

Dear Members,

We hope your experience at the National Black MBA Conference was successful and that you made great connections.

We need speakers for our next sessions. This is a great opportunity for you to moderate the call and sharpen your communication and leadership skills. Please let us know as soon as possible if you have a potential speaker that you would like us to meet.

Many of our members schools will be visiting New York City and we would like to coordinate a networking dinner with the Consortium Alums on Wall Street. Please write to us and let us know when you will be visting the city and what your areas of interest are so that we can plan accordingly.

Lastly, we are excited that our group will be featured in an article in the Consortium's IN Magazine, so keep your eyes open.
